Immediate effect of bilateral ankle kinesio taping on balance and strength in community dwelling elderly population
Abstract
Title: Immediate effect of bilateral ankle kinesio taping on balance and strength in community dwelling elderly population .
Objective : To examine the immediate effect of bilateral ankle kinesio taping on balance and strength in community dwelling elderly population
Design: Experimental study
Background: There are so many evidence on the effect of kinesio taping on balance and strength but that was on athletic population. As we know, Balance is a major component to assess in geriatric population as well. In my knowledge, no study has been found to see theimmediate effect of kinesio taping on ankle in geriatric population. Considering the prevalence of fall, impaired balance, ankle instability ,impaired proprioception, they can hinder activity of daily living.Kinesio tape has not been studied for that purpose.
Methods:A sample of convenience of 30 subjects was assessed for inclusions and exclusion criteria. A duly designed informed consent will be obtained from the subjects who are willing to participateThe subjects was then be divided into following two groups . The Experimental group was given ankle kinesio tape bilaterally. In the control group, sham tape (adhesive tape) wasgiven . Balance and ankle Muscle Strength was assessed under following condition: Baseline (without application of taping), immediately after taping by using TUGT (to assess the Balance) and Hand Held Dynamometer (to assess the Muscle Strength) .
Results&conclusion : There was significant difference between groups on balance by decreasing the time duration to cover the distance immediately after tape application and changes in strength during Planterflexion before and after tape application. No difference was noted during dorsiflexion .
