Abstract

Introduction: This study investigates nurses' perception of pediatric pain management in Taleghani Hospital in Gorgan. Pain management is one of the most important rights of children and one of the priorities of treatment. Relieving pain prevents adverse consequences and serious complications and promises the natural growth and development of the next generation. Nurses are among those who have the most relationship with suffering children and can prevent further problems by examining and treating children's pain. Studying nurses' perception plays an important role in pain management.

Method: The present research is qualitative and phenomenological. 18 nurses working in different internal, surgical and infection wards of children of Taleghani patients in Gorgan participated in this research. We collected data using interview method. We performed an objective-based sampling and analyzed data using Colaizzi method.

Results: we investigated nurses' perception in two main areas and by the use of treatment measures. We classified the findings of nurses' perception into three concepts: ability to identify, reaction and beliefs, and seven sub-concepts including awareness of the reality of pain, importance of caregiver role, dependence on medication, patience, interpersonal interactions, beliefs about placebo, negative attitude toward mother's presence during procedures.

Conclusion: Nurses' perception indicates their ability and awareness of the nature of pain, factors affecting it and understanding the role of mother. Studying their experiences is a valuable asset for better management of pain. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to the issue of pain in nursing education programs in children and consider pain management courses for training experienced nurses. In addition, we should also take into account the participation and role of physicians in the management of children's pain and provide appropriate conditions and facilities for the implementation of pain management standards.
