A retrospective study on ectopic pregnancy

Abstract

Background: diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was frequently missed and rising trend in incidence of ectopic pregnancies necessitates awareness about risk factors, resultant morbidity and mortality. Aim of the study was to determine the incidences, clinical presentations, risk factors, treatment and morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy.

Methods: retrospective analysis of ectopic pregnancy was done at shanti fertility centre thiruvanmyur, appar fertility centre guindy, Krishna nursing home thoraipakkam for a period of one month. Parameters: age, parity, risk factors, type, side, site, symptoms were noted.

Results: out of 250 cases 13 were ectopic.  Highest incidence of ectopic pregnancy was between 26 to 30 years [39.2%]. It occurred mostly in nulliparous women [45.6%].common symptoms: abdominal pain91.2%], bleeding PV [69%], amenorrhoea [22.8%]. Etiology: PID [22.8%], LSCS [22.8%], previous abortion [16.4%], previous ectopic [7.6%], IUCD [7.6%], tubal surgeries [7.6%].right sided ectopic was more common [69%]. Site of ectopic was mostly the fallopian tube [92.4%].68.4% were ruptured ectopic. In 69.6% of cases salpingectomy was carried out and 30.4% of cases were subjected to medical management with methotrexate. There were no maternal mortality.

Conclusion: early diagnosis, identifying the underlying risk factor and timely intervention will help in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with ectopic pregnancy.
