Abstract

Taking care of one's health has become increasingly important in modern times. Identifying and attempting to eliminate the causes that lead to sickness among the elderly is very important, as this section of the population is characterised by susceptibility and a loss of functional capacity as they age. Aging causes a generalised degeneration of numerous organs and systems, resulting in decreased effectiveness of physiological activities as well as an increase in disease risk factors. The elderly population faces health issues that are different from adults or children.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross sectional analytical study conducted around the area and village population covered by medical college. After obtaining the consent, the data regarding sociodemographic profile with the relevant morbidity data was collected in the predesigned questionnaire. The main inclusion criterion was the person 60 years of age and above who gave consent to participate.

RESULTS: 78.03% of the geriatric population was of 60-69 years age group. 15.02% were 70-79 years and 6.95% belongs to ≥ 80 years age group. There were total 64.57% Males and 35.43% Female participants above 60 years age group. The musculoskeletal problems were most common morbidity in 68.16% participants. It was followed by ophthalmic morbidities in 38.79% old age populations. Oro-dental health problems were 35.20%, 34.08% with ENT related problems, Gastro Intestinal related problems (30.49%), Skin Diseases (25.11%), Genitourinary diseases (23.99%), Respiratory Diseases (13.68%) are also prevalent in geriatric population detected in the survey.

CONCLUSION: The higher load of increasing morbidity highlights the importance of strengthening of healthcare facilities for them as they are more vulnerable to various diseases at this stage of life.
