Management of Intervertebral Disc Prolapse (IVDP) Through Panchakarma & Shamana Chikitsa- A Case Report

Abstract

Background: Katigatvata is mentioned as a Vatavyadhi among eighty Nanatamja Vatavyadhi described in Charak Samhita, which closely resembles Intervertebral disc prolapse (IVDP) modern science. It is characterized by pain in the low back, thighs, legs, muscle spasm, abnormal gait. Its prevalence rate is high in people having age between  45-65years.  Aim and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Ayurvedic management, including Shodhana and Shamana Chikitsa, in the management of IVDP( Katigatavata). Materials and Methods: A single case study of a 45years older man who was already diagnosed with intervertebral disc prolapsed in L4L5. He was presented with pain in the lumbar region, numbness in both legs with their restricted movements for 3-4months. He was treated with Panchakarma treatment, including Local Snehana, Kati Vasti, Sasneha Niruha Vasti, and Anuvasana Vasti, followed by Shamana Chikitsa. The treatment was continued for consecutive 14 days.  Observation & Results: Symptomatic assessment of the patient was carried out after 14 days. The satisfactory outcome was there, and the overall quality of life of the patient was significantly improved. Discussion: This case has successfully managed this condition by utilizing Ayurveda & drugs having properties such as Vatahara, Vedanasthapana, Shothahara, Shoola Prashamana, Pustikara, Shramahara, Bala Vardhaka, Shukhmasrotogami, and Bruhana but Ushna veerya, which showed promising results. Conclusion: The regime mentioned above gives significant relief in the management of IVDP (Katigatvata).
