Abstract

BACKGROUND:China informed WHO on the 31st of December 2019 about instances of pneumonia with an unknown cause in the Wuhan district of China. Within weeks, the epidemic had spread to 25 nations, and the cause had been identified as the new virus SARS COV-2. WHO has declared COVID-19 as pandemic on 11th March 2020. The 1st COVID-19 case seen in India were in Kerala on 30th January 2020, involving a person having a history of travel to Wuhan. Student mental health has been a growing issue in higher education. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought this susceptible group back into the limelight. Mental health issues are the most common cause of academic failure.Mental illness can affect students' motivation, awareness, and social interaction, all of which are important factors in their learning success. Depression has a profound and harmful effect on the mental health of all people. However, they can have a profound effect on the mental health of medical providers, especially those in the early stages of care. The impact of Covid-19 exposure on health care professionals has recently been studied, and it has been found to be associated with an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

MATERIAL AND METHODS:The present study of 50 college going students (Age goup: 18-21 years) was carried out as a questionnaire based cross sectional, observational study.In the present study, there were 28 males (56%) and 22 females (44%).Out of the 50 students, 39 had signs of mild to severe depression, whereas 11 remain unaffected.Out of the 11 unaffected students, 8 were males and 3 were females.

CONCLUSION:Colleges may be able to lessen the mental health consequences of Covid-19 during the epidemic by investing in tools to address remote learning issues and social isolation.
