Experience of Emergency Inguinal Herniorrhaphy under Spinal Anesthesia and General Anesthesia

Abstract

Aim: To compare the effectiveness of spinal anesthesia vs general anesthesia for inguinal hernia repair.

Study design: comparative study

Place and Duration: This Study was conducted at People's University of Medical and Health Sciences Nawabshah Pakistan from February 2018 to January 2020

Methodology: This study included all patients who had an emergency inguinal hernia surgery. Patients were distributed into 2 groups established on their general health of the patients as judged by anesthetists and surgeons, Cases who received spinal anesthesia (SA) and those who received general anesthesia (GA). Results were evaluated based on a variety of factors, including recovery time,  hospital stay , overall cost, and recurrence rate.

Results: A total of 90 patients were involved in this study. A total of 32 Patients (were treated with SA, whereas 58 patients were treated with GA. When compared to the GA group, the SA group had significantly fewer cardiac (P = 0.044) and respiratory issues (P = 0.027). A shorter ICU stay, shorter stay in hospital, low cost, and quicker recovery time (P = 0.035), (P = 0.001), (P = 0.000), (P = 0.000) respectively.

Conclusion: Spinal anesthesia might provide better post-operative results and patient safety.in emergency Inguinal hernia repair,
