Abstract

Introduction: On Carrying out their dental profession, dentists are always exposed to a number of occupational hazards. They cause various changes, specific to the profession which develop and intensify with years. Asthma caused due to dental materials is also an important occupational hazard. Aim of our study is to determine tha allergic population among dental students.

Materials and methods: A structural questionnaire was prepared and circulated among first year dental students through google forms. A list of 13 questionnaires that can possibly influence students' decisions was presented to students of dental institutions. The completed survey records  were immediately collected and are analysed which is used for the survey. Due to lockdown with some partial restriction and in concern with the spread of the pandemic traditional survey methods like direct visit and in-person interviews are avoided. Online web survey techniques are often constrained by internet coverage. SPSS software was used for the survey.

Result: From the survey conducted among 81 dental students. Majority of dental students prefer nitrile gloves (53.09%), 30.8% for vinyl gloves and 16.05% for NRL gloves. Majority of them think latex gloves cause hypersensitivity 58.02% and 41.98% think they don't cause hypersensitivity. Majority of the study population are allergic to latex gloves  (65.43%), 22.2% aren't aware about it and 12.5% are not allergic to latex gloves. About 69.14% of the study population are not allergic to anesthetics used during dental treatment, 17.28% are allergic to certain anesthetics and 13.58 are allergic to anesthetics which are used.

Conclusion: Dental products like acrylics, resins and polymer materials are used in restorative dentistry which represent a major advance in dentistry. Although they cause allergy in a part of the study population and should always keep in mind that every technology can exert a negative impact on some members.
