KNOWLEDGE, AWARENESS AND PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS - A SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE

Abstract

Background: Prevalence of hypertension among dental students was the major risk factor of hypertension depending on lifestyle, which is the result of a person's knowledge and practice adopted at a young age. This study was conducted to find out the prevalence of hypertension and its modifiable risk factors among the dental students.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students. A total of 100 dental students were surveyed in the study. A validated self-administered semi-structure questionnaire was used to assess risk factors of hypertension, prevention from hypertension,treatment from hypertension and normal value of blood pressure. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 24. Chi-square test was applied to measure proportion differences between several study variables among male and females.  

Result: Majority of the respondents were  between the age groups of 18 to 30 were 97% and 31 to 40 were 3%. About 64.4% were male and 35.6% were female.Of the respondents were asked about the High blood pressure or hypertension, is a disease that occurs when the blood flows through the arteries at a higher than normal pressure 63.4% are say true, 16.8% are say false and 19.8% are say don't know. Approximately, 59.4% of the respondents reported the normal values of the blood pressure is 120/80mmHg,16.8%% of the respondents reported the normal values of the blood pressure is 140/90mmHg,14.9% of the respondents reported the normal values of the blood pressure is 80/120mmHg and 8.9% of the respondents reported the normal values of the blood pressure is none of these from the above options.

Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension among the study respondents was lower than in the general population in urban areas. However, a well-structured awareness and interventional programs for controlling modifiable risk factors of hypertension is desired, especially for those with more than one risk factor or strong family history.
