ASSESSMENT OF DEPRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR AMONG THE UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS- A SURVEY

Abstract

Introduction: health is defined as a complete physical, mental and social wellbeing without any disease or infirmity. Dental education can be a significant source of stress. And when compared to the general population, dental students have higher levels of stress. Therefore the aim of the study is to determine the depressive behaviour among the dental students.

Materials and Methods: this cross sectional study enrolled dental students in tamilnadu. This study was conducted in February 2021. In this present study there are 104 participants. The statistical data was created and circulated through google forms. The results and observations were recorded in a pie chart. The chi square test and correlation between gender was done and represented in the bar chart (p<0.05 was statistically significant).

Results: a total of 103 participants from the dental colleges were included in the study.the population consists of 66.02% females and 33.98% males. Among this majority of students (50.49%) was first year. 50.96% of students responded that they felt disheartened during depression. According to chi square test between the gender and did they felt disheartened showed the p value is 0.056 which is equal to 0.05 and hence it is significant statistically.

Conclusion:  the present found that dental students have little level of depression. To manage stress several strategies are also given to dental students to maintain stress level.
