Abstract

Background: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a sharp and short pain that arises due to the result of stimuli like chemical, tactile, evaporative, and thermal on the exposed dentin. The reviews about the usage of desensitizing toothpaste to treat DH have some limitations. Our team has extensive knowledge that has translated into high quality publications. The study aims to determine awareness and knowledge about desensitizing toothpaste among dental students.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students using questionnaires through google forms. The questionnaire consisted of 13 questions that were framed based on awareness about desensitizing toothpaste and At the end of the survey, all the responses received from 100 participants were collected and tabulated. The frequencies and percentages were calculated and The data is statistically analyzed by using IBM SPSS software version 23. Descriptive analysis was performed to calculate frequencies of various categories. Chi-square test was used to find the association between year age and gender with a number of responses provided by the participants.

Results: In this survey, about 74.49% of responders have the habit of using other oral hygiene aids such as mouthwash whereas 24.49% of responders never tried such oral hygiene aids. About 51.02% of respondents experienced discomfort when they eat or drink certain foods while 48.98% did not experience any discomfort when they eat or drink certain foods. About 77.78% reported that they had suffered from sensitive teeth whereas 22.22% reported that they did not suffer from sensitive teeth. About 87.88% of responders believe that brushing their teeth with desensitizing toothpaste can reduce sensitivity. About 30.93% reported that the usage of soft-bristle toothbrushes can stop teeth sensitivity.

Conclusion: To reduce Dentine Hypersensitivity, various methods like the application of air blast to evaluate the pain and the usage of fluoride-containing desensitizing toothpaste were used by the dentist. About two-thirds of the population believe that brushing their teeth with desensitizing toothpaste can reduce sensitivity. Therefore this survey creates awareness about Desensitizing toothpaste among dental students.
