AWARENESS OF INTRAVENOUS DRUG ADMINISTRATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS - A SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE

Abstract

Background - Inpatients are more likely to have drug incompatibilities, which can increase morbidity and mortality while also increasing costs.

Aim - To assess the knowledge of intravenous drug administration among dental students.

Materials and methods - This cross- sectional study was conducted in a private dental college among undergraduates in chennai, from January 2021 to February 2021. A questionnaire was used in this study and circulated among undergraduates through online surveys.

Results -  The present study includes 115 participants. 33.9% were first year ,27.8% were second year, 26.1% were third year, 4.3% were fourth year and 7.8% were interns. .Majority (13.04%) are the first years who were aware about the intravenous drug administration when compared to second (3.48%), third (5.22%), fourth year( 2.61%) and interns (0.87%) . Pearson chi square test was done and the p value is 0.015  and hence it is statistically significant.

Conclusion - First year students found to have more knowledge about the intravenous drug administration among other dental students. A checklist should be implemented in wards to facilitate the monitoring of IV infusion dilution and administration rate.
