Abstract

This paper has provided an analysis of logit coefficients and made inferences regarding their implications for the existing literature and the formulated hypotheses. The dependent variables have been identified to involve the Republican governors’ decision to expand or reject Medicaid expansion. On the other hand, independent variables affecting these decisions have been examined and include Medicaid generosity, the state’s potential economic benefit, and uninsured rate; as well as public support for Obama, the Governor’s ideology, and the State Legislative Council. The STATA output and associated statistical analyses reveal mixed outcomes. For example, two measures that are seen to play the leading role in shaping gubernatorial decision making include the composition of the legislative chambers (Democrat-controlled or Republican-controlled) and the increasing support for Obama in 2012. Even in states perceived to be Republican, situations where the majority of citizens expressed support for Obama are accompanied by a high likelihood of Republican governors supporting the expansion due to the need to avoid risks of losing the electorate in future elections. The situation is more pronounced in Republican states where the two legislative chambers are Democrat-controlled, an outcome that prompts the governors to adopt the expansion.
