Abstract

Bisehri Booti (Aerva lanata L.), a member of the Amaranthaceae family, is a significant remedy in Unani medicine. Although it was introduced late in clinical practice, it is now routinely used to treat urinary illnesses. It has demonstrated remarkable therapeutic potential in the treatment of diseases of the kidney, prostate, and bladder. The purpose of this study was to determine the nephroprotective impact of Bisehri Booti against doxorubicin-induced nephrotoxicity in albino rats. The animals were divided into eight groups of six animals each, including a plain control, a negative control, two pre-and post-treatment groups, and two concurrent groups receiving progressively lower and higher doses. The plain control group received only distilled water for 14 days. The negative control group received doxorubicin (7.5 mg/kg) on day 1 and was followed for 14 days. The test medication was administered to animals in pretreatment groups (low and high doses) for 14 days; however, on the eighth day, doxorubicin was injected. In post-treatment groups, doxorubicin was started on day 1 and the test medication was started on day 8 (low and high doses) for 14 days. Concurrent groups received both the test drug and doxorubicin on day 1, and the test drug was continued (low and high dose) for 14 days. The nephroprotective effect was determined biochemically by measuring serum creatinine, blood urea, albumin, and urine protein levels, as well as histopathology study. Using the one-way ANOVA test, the effect seen in pre, post, and concurrently treated groups was compared to that observed in plain and negative control groups. The study's findings established that Bisehri Booti (Aerva lanata L.) exerted a considerable nephroprotective effect in the presence of doxorubicin-induced nephrotoxicity.
