Abstract

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome is an acute renal disorder and it is also occur in a pediatric population. It may occur in adult population also, but mostly pediatric populations are affected. Management of the childhood Nephrotic syndrome involves intense outpatient follow-up and family participation for disease monitoring and treatment. Parents are taking care of child with the nephrotic syndrome in the home as well as in the Hospital. So, betterly we can identify or understand the life experiences and awareness regarding the nephrotic syndrome in children. After knowing their life experiences and awareness regarding nephrotic syndrome, they can improve their level of awareness and life experiences and able to ventilate their feelings.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess the Parental Life-experiences and awareness regarding effective management and follow-up of children with Nephrotic syndrome.

METHODS & MATERIALS: Mixed (both Qualitative & Quantitative) approach was used along with Convergent parallel research design. Non-probability Quota sampling technique was used to select 20 parents of children with Nephrotic syndrome. To collect the data, Open-ended self-structured interview questions and self-structured Questionnaire methods were used.

RESULTS: The result of qualitative data reveals that 30% of parents felt tension regarding children’s condition, 45% had tension regarding daily activities, 65% take a help of pediatrician for reducing oedema, 30% get satisfied with the treatment, 35% believed that citrus fruits should be avoided, 60% hadn’t knowledge, 70% followed the follow-up schedule, 45% believed that it was a kidney disease. The result of quantitative data shows 20% parents were having good knowledge, 50% were having average knowledge and 30% were having poor knowledge regarding effective management and follow-up of children with the Nephrotic syndrome. There is no association of demographic variables with awareness level.
