Abstract

BACKGROUND: Propolis is a natural resinous substance which has been collected by bees. The antimicrobial property of propolis is very helpful to combat against many oral diseases causing microorganisms.

AIM: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Propolis against streptococcus mutans bacteria.

Materials and method: A systematic review of controlled trials was performed. The 422 number of articles related to efficiency of propolis against streptococcus mutans were retrieved from electronic databases. Out of 422 articles, 270 number of articles were screened. The intervention and outcomes were assessed for systematic review.

RESULTS: Five studies were included in our systematic reviews which were randomized control trials.  All of the five articles were found to be statistically significant, but further studies should be done to prove the appropriate effectiveness of propolis against streptococcus mutans bacteria.

CONCLUSION:  The propolis was found to be very effective and in reducing streptococcus mutans bacteria and can be used as a better alternative treatment to prevent dental caries
