Abstract

BACKGROUND:

During their academic and clinical studies, medical students are exposed to a variety of factors that have been shown to contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. The purpose of this article was to address the issue of depression among medical students, including its prevalence, causes, and major complications, as well as recommendations for early detection and the assistance of a single medical student. After finding that medical students have a higher rate of depression than most people, the study looked at the types of tests used in the program, student characteristics (such as personality type and completeness), resilience, selection processes, student motivation, and clinical environment. The report makes a number of recommendations for improving the mental health of students, including including peer support and leadership in the day-to-day running of the institution. It also underlines the advantages of including a welfare curriculum, since the ability to prevent and manage stress and depression is critical in bolstering physicians' abilities.
