Abstract

Background: Gallbladder Cancer (GBC) is highly fatal with prognosis poor and often diagnosed at late stage. Female preponderance of GBC makes sense to explore the reproductive parameters as the risk factors. Present study was carried to identify the role and extent of modifiable reproductive variables to the occurrence of GBC.

Material and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on newly 92 confirmed cases of GBC and 92 healthy controls. Chi square test, independent t Test, Mann-Whitney Test and Logistic regression were applied and Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95% CI was calculated.

Results: Age, education and stone history of the participants had significant association with GBC. Adjusting the effect of these, the menarche age (AOR: 0.77), effective marriage age (AOR: 0.85), parity (AOR: 1.85), live birth (AOR: 1.94), age at first birth (AOR: 0.86) and age at last birth (AOR: 1.09) emerged as significant risk/ protective factors for GBC. But, when those significantly associated variables included in the logistic regression, only menarche age and parity appeared to be the risk factor of GBC.

Conclusion: Women moving to higher order parity or of lower menarche age are the suspicious subjects for GBC incidence and these subjects screened timely for the signal of GB stone and GBC may help to adopt early intervention strategy.
