Prevalence and Association of Hypertension with Body Weight: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of hypertension with body weight.

Study Design: Cress sectional study

Place and duration:

Methodology: Adults aged 18 and above were recruited from department of Medicine, Bilawal Medical College for boys LUMHS Jamshoro Pakistan from January 2020 to July 2020. The participants in the study were chosen using a stratified random sampling method. After gathering sociodemographic information, a sphygmomanometer was used to take the subject's blood pressure. Weight and Height was taken for the calculation of Body Mass Index. For data entry and analysis, SPSS version 21 was utilized.

Results: Males constituted 60.31% (n=193) of the participants in this study. About 27.5% of the total, were between the ages of 18 and 30 years. Total 70.62 percent were married, 12.81 percent were single, and 16.56 percent were divorced or widowed, We found that 26.87 percent (n=86) of the 320 individuals had been diagnosed with hypertension. Males had higher blood pressure than females, although the difference was not statistically significant (X 2 = 1.74, P=0.18). Divorced/widows had higher blood pressure, and there was a statistically significant difference in marital status across the groups. (P0.001) (X 2 = 32.4). A total of 40 (12.50%) participants were obese. It was shown that a considerably more significant percentage of research participants were hypertensive in the obese group. (P<0.05).

Conclusion: The department of Medicine, Bilawal Medical College for boys LUMHS Jamshoro Pakistan has a high prevalence of hypertension Patients. The outcomes of this study imply that early detection of hypertension at the community level is required and that monitoring individuals can accomplish this regularly.
