Knowledge And Awareness About Cleft Lip Among Undergraduate Dental College Students In Chennai - A Questionnaire Study

Abstract

Background

Cleft lip is a craniofacial anomaly that is caused due to various factors. The main reason for clefting in infants is found to be due to environmental or genetic factors.

Aim

The aim of the present study is to assess the awareness about cleft lip among dental college students.

Materials And Method

A cross sectional online survey based study was conducted among  undergraduate  dental students. The required data was collected using a specially designed questionnaire distributed as online survey forms. A total of 100 responses were collected. The data was statistically analysed using SPSS software. Chi square test was performed to obtain the significance between two variables.

Result

A majority of 25% of the first year students have seen cleft lip cases. Similarly, a majority (31%) of first year students are aware that cleft lip can be treated but majority of the 3rd students are more aware about cleft lip than the students studying in the 1st, 2nd and 4th years.

Conclusion

Knowledge about cleft lip is necessary to prevent, diagnose and treat cleft lip. It can be greatly achieved by good education.
