Knowledge And Awareness About Removable Partial Denture Among Dental Students- A Questionnaire Survey

Abstract

Introduction A denture is a dental prosthesis which is a replacement for missing teeth and its surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures that are commercially available are complete and partial dentures. A completely edentulous patient with completely no teeth usually opts for complete dentures whereas a partially edentulous patient opts for a removable partial denture. Components of a removable partial denture are a base and a metal framework that provides support to the denture. When the patient has one or few natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw, partial dentures are used. There are various types of materials out of which dentures can be made and some of them include composite resin, porcelain, acrylic resin and acrylic. Out of these the two most common ones are acrylic and porcelain and are extensively used by denturists for making custom denture teeth.

Aim The aim of the study is to assess the awareness of removable partial dentures among dental students.

Materials and methods  A total sample of 100 dental students were included in this study. This cross sectional study was conducted in a private dental college from February to April 2021. An online questionnaire with 10 questions was distributed across online platforms and responses were recorded. The statistics were computed with the SPSS version 23 software. Chi square test was done to analyse the data obtained.

Results In the study, it was observed that around 65-70% of the final year students and PG students have much more awareness about removable partial dentures.

Conclusion Dental students need to be given more awareness about removable partial dentures. By educating them, it will help them to improve their knowledge about the field of dentistry.
