Abstract

Introduction : Vetiveria zizanioides is a green flowering plant used in producing silver nanoparticles  The antifungal activity of the silver nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by the modified Tollens process was evaluated for pathogenic Candida spp. by means of the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are metal structures at the nanoscale. AgNPs have exhibited antimicrobial activities against fungi and bacteria; however synthesis of AgNPs can generate toxic waste during the reaction process. The aim  of the present study is to find the antifungal activity of silver nanoparticles derived from Vetiveria zizanioides.

Materials and methods : Vetiveria zizanoides  was obtained from the local market and was made to dry in a shady region to finalize the moisture content. In the end the final solution was filtered using a filter paper and finally the plant extract was prepared. After this, the product was dried and heated in a furnace. The annealed product thus obtained was taken as the sample for this study. The silver nanoparticles synthesized were measured optically using double beam UV– vis spectroscopy. The synthesized silver nanoparticles  were optically measured at different wavelengths ranging from 250 nm to 350 nm. The prepared and sterilized medium was swabbed with test organisms and nanoparticles with different concentrations were added to the wells. The plates were incubated at 28° C for 48-72hours. After the incubation time the zone of inhibition was measured.

Results : The zone of inhibition was 10 mm for both control and at 100 concentration and 8mm at both 25 and 50 concentrations. This shows the potent antifungal activity of the synthesized silver nanoparticles

Conclusion :  This study was done to find a way for a greener approach of synthesizing the silver nanoparticles using Vetiveria zizanoides  thereby giving pharmacological evidence against the antifungal activity. The silver nanoparticles were identified by light yellow  color and the surface plasmon resonance was positioned peak at 300 nm. The silver  nanoparticle synthesized using Vetioveria zizanioides  has potent antifungal activity with a wide array of medical and dental applications
